The Smoke-free Premises etc. (Wales) Regulations 2007 came into effect on 2 April 2007. All indoor public places and enclosed spaces are affected and will display the relevant no smoking signs.

The aim of the no smoking law is to protect employees and the general public from the harmful side effects of second-hand smoke.
The law creates three specific offences:

Reasons For Banning Smoking in Public Places

The Smoke-free Premises law has been introduced in Wales to protect the public and employees from the hazardous side effects of secondhand smoke.
Passive smoking is a health hazard, and has been proved increase the risk of heart disease and lung cancer by around 24% in those affected. Each time a breath of secondhand smoke is taken in, over 4,000 chemicals enter the lungs. Many are highly toxic and over 50 are known to cause cancer.
As over 80% of secondhand smoke is both odourless and invisible most people are unaware they are even breathing it in, this puts most second hand smokers at even greater risk.

Nearly 80% of smokers say they want to quit, the new no smoking bans in Wales should help give some of those smokers an extra incentive to stop smoking.

Smoking Ban Effects

In Wales all indoor, or enclosed public spaces, public transport and work vehicles used by more than one person are affected by the smoking ban. In your workplace staff smoking rooms and indoor smoking areas will no longer be allowed, smokers will have to go outside.
All Pubs, Clubs, Bars, Restaurants and Indoor Sporting Venues will also be banning cigarettes.
