Secondhand Smoking

Secondhand smoke, also known as passive smoke, is a mixture of the smoke exhaled from the lungs of a smoker and the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar. You also may have heard it called environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), passive, or involuntary smoke.

Passive Smoking

Recent studies have suggested that passive smoke contains more dangerous ingredients than previously thought:
Secondhand smoke is a mixture of 4000 chemicals, 200 of which are poisonous and 63 of which cause cancer.
The EPA reports that secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in the USA, killing more than 40000 non-smokers each year. (Active smoking and Alcohol being the top two.)
The only way to protect nonsmokers from the dangerous chemicals in second hand smoke is to eliminate smoking indoors.

Smoking Bans

Passive smoking is one of the key issues leading to smoking bans in workplaces and indoor public places around the world. With the recent move in the United Kingdom to ban smoking in public places, continuing pressure is being applied to governments around the globe, to reduce passive smoking.
Reduction of passive smoking is important not only for the prevention of many medical problems in adults, but also for the promotion of children's health.

Smoking Ill Health

Worries about lung cancer, heart disease and other negative side effects of second hand smoking are causing many people to quit smoking.
Passive smoke is definitely hazardous to everyone's health, regardless of how much secondhand smoke you breathe.
Arguments suggest that exposure to secondhand smoke is so widespread that even small increases translate into large numbers of sick people.
Secondhand smoke is a risk factor for the development of asthma in children and aids in worsening the condition of up to one million asthmatic children.
