Nicotine Gum
Chewing nicotine gum, which comes in two strengths, allows your body to absorb nicotine through the lining of your mouth.
Nicotine gum helps you to control your smoking craving whenever you feel the urge to smoke a cigarette. It is not like ordinary chewing gum and often has a peppery taste, this can fade with use, so you must persevere in using it.
As with all Nicotine Replacement Therapies it must be used properly to get the full benefit.
Nicotine Gum comes in a choice of flavours and has two strengths, Regular and Maximum.
If you smoke 18 or more cigarettes a day then you will need to chew the Maximum strength (4mg) gum, otherwise the regular (2mg) will suffice.
For effective use follow the manufacturers instructions.
The recommendation is to chew the gum slowly till the taste is strong and then rest between your gum and the side of your mouth to allow the nicotine to absorb. This is then repeated after the taste weakens. You should replace with a fresh piece of gum every hour, and reduce the amount of gum, or the length of chewing time gradually after around six to eight weeks.
Side Effects
- Maximum strength NRT gum can help reduce weight gain associated with quitting smoking.
- The main side effect is a slight irritation of the mouth and throat, but this lessens with use.
- The gum is not recommended for denture wearers.
- NRT Gum can aggravate stomach ulcers.
